If there has been any political star through this Covid crisis, it has to be New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Adern. She’s embodied grace under fire, while demonstrating the kind of authenticity and empathy clearly lacking many of world’s other leaders – particularly men.
This came to mind after an amusing email found its way to my Inbox. It contrasted the response of world leaders to Covid based on gender.
Take a look.
Here are the leaders of the countries who have suffered the most from the pandemic.
Here are the leaders of the countries who have been most successful in controlling the virus.
So what does that tell us?
Is this coincidence or an insight into the different management styles of men and women? I wanted to find out, so I consulted the recent KPMG study on the subject: “Advancing the Future of Women in Business.”
What was the most commonly cited quality of women as leaders? Adaptability. Other leading qualities were authenticity, as well as transformational and democratic management styles.
What better description of the characteristics you’d most want a leader to have in times of crisis.
Let’s think ahead to the world unfolding in front of us. Never has a time required more adaptability. The world is changing before our eyes. Leaders need to have the courage to adapt and transform, while also being inclusive so people buy into the change.
We can see how women are uniquely qualified for leadership in these times – and the forseeable future.
This is another one of those teaching moments. What’s it teaching me? In my ever-expanding market analysis tool, I’m adding a field for gender. I want to plot how the gender of fund managers affects performance.
I’ll let you know what I learn.
So please keep reading.
Thanks,
Eric
